Altercation leaves one dead in downtown Austin

AUSTIN ( -- One man is dead and another is facing manslaughter charges after an altercation in downtown Austin Thursday afternoon.

Austin Police say they received a 911 report of a disturbance between two homeless men in the 100 block of East 5th Street around 5:20 p.m. Thursday. When officers and Austin-Travis County EMS medics arrived, they found witnesses performing CPR on an unresponsive male lying on the sidewalk. EMS continued resuscitation efforts and transported the victim to Dell Seton Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at 6:12 p.m.

Detectives interviewed several witnesses at the scene, and one witness was able to provide cellphone video of the altercation. Based on that footage and witness statements, 63-year old Robert Batiste was arrested for manslaughter.

The Travis County Medical Examiner is in the process of conducting an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. The victim’s identity is currently unknown.
