AUSTIN (KJCE) -- Austin Police say a drug bust along Interstate 35 last week led to more than $1.6 million of methamphetamine being taken off the streets.

Officers stopped a 2008 Pontiac vehicle last Wednesday in the 14300 block of South Interstate 35 for speeding. While speaking with the driver, 22-year old Reymundo Bustamante, officers picked up on a number of clues using their training in drug trafficking technique recognition that led them to believe the driver may be smuggling illegal narcotics.

After further investigation, APD K9 "Cuatro" positively alerted on the vehicle. Officers discovered approximately 93 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in the SUV’s gas tank and tires.

APD says the estimated street value of the seized drugs is over $1.6 million.

Bustamante, a resident of Laredo, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison and a $10,000 fine. The case has been referred to the U.S. Attorney’s office for further review.
