AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin Police will be stepping up enforcement of the state's "Move Over" law Wednesday.

Police say Wednesday's operation will focus on drivers not moving over for tow trucks that have their emergency lights activated while on the side of the highway. The department says 18 officers under APD's Highway Enforcement Command will assist in the operation.

Texas' "Move Over" law says drivers must either vacate the travel lane closest to an emergency vehicle, or slow down to 20mph below the posted speed limit.

The law covers emergency vehicles including tow trucks, which were added to the Transportation Code in 2013. According to APD, research from AAA shows that a tow truck driver is hit and killed once every six days.

Police say this will be the first of a series of operations to educate the public on the law, and to help protect the towing industry.
