MIDLAND, Texas (Talk1370.com) -- Five people are dead and at least 21 others were injured after a shooting spree rang out in the Midland-Odessa area Saturday afternoon.

Police say the entire incident began just after 3 p.m. Saturday when a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Interstate 20. The suspect, described by Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke as a white male in his 30s, proceeded to point a rifle toward the DPS unit, hitting one of the troopers.

After fleeing the scene, the suspect continued shooting at random, striking other motorists and two other police officers from both Odessa and Midland. He then proceeded to hijack a United States Postal Service mail van, continuing to fire at random.

Officers finally engaged the suspect near a Cinergy movie theater, shooting and killing him.

Despite initial reports of multiple suspects, police have not been able to confirm any of those reports and now believe there was just the one shooter.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, in a statement, said he will visit Odessa Sunday morning. He called the act a "senseless and cowardly attack."
