AUSTIN ( -- The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has eliminated many of Austin's traditional events for 2020, but the Trail Of Lights may survive by going back to its roots - as a drive-through event.

The Austin City Council will consider an agenda item on Thursday that would permit the event to become drive-through only, lasting for 30 days.

The city says 1,300 vehicles could be accommodated each night. According to the draft ordinance, the event would also be free of charge.

If council votes to approve the change, the event would still need approval from Austin Public Health and the city's special events permitting process.

The Trail of Lights traces its roots to 1965, and over the years has become one of the three largest events in Austin, normally drawing around 400,000 people each year.
