Austin Fire: Change clocks, check smoke alarms this weekend

March 09, 2018 - 8:31 am

AUSITN (KJCE) -- Austin Fire officials remind you to check your smoke alarms while you're changing your clocks and "springing forward" this weekend.

Daylight saving time begins this Sunday at 2:00 a.m. Fire officials say it is a perfect opportunity for residents to check the batteries in their smoke alarms, and replace them if needed.

The number one reason that lives are saved in a fire is the presence of a working smoke alarm, which officials say can cut the risk of dying in a house fire by almost 50 percent.

"A live battery is the simplest, cheapest life insurance you can buy," said Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr. "It only takes a few minutes to check and change the battery, but it could save your life."

Chief Kerr also says the department can provide working smoke alarms at no cost to those in need. The department has a special hotline residents can call at (512) 974-0299.
