AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- A new partnership between Austin Resource Recovery and Goodwill Central Texas will provide curbside pickup of unwanted clothing, shoes, toys, and housewares.

The new service begins Monday and is available to all Austin Resource Recovery customers.

"This partnership will allow us to reduce the number of textiles going to the landfill while also supporting the local reuse economy and giving clothing and housewares a second chance at life," said Austin Resource Recovery Director Ken Snipes.

A recent study estimated 6.6 million pounds of clothing and textiles are going to the landfill each year.

Items that are collected will be sorted and sold at Goodwill stores in the area. Items that can't be sold in the retail stores will be sent to Goodwill's outlet stores, then baled and sold on the commodities market.

ARR customers can schedule a pickup online or by calling 512-637-7190. Goodwill will then send a collection bag through the mail for the customer to fill with their items; the customer then puts the bag out for collection on the scheduled pick-up date.

You can learn more about the program, including more details on what items are accepted, at www.austintexas.gov/clothing.
