Austin Water customers report bad smell in tap water

Utility says "no safety hazard" in water supply

AUSTIN (KJCE) -- Some customers of Austin Water have been complaining of a bad smell coming from their tap water since Thursday, but utility officials say it's nothing to worry about.

The utility says it believes the odor issues are being caused by the presence of zebra mussels in a raw water pipeline at the Ullrich Water Treatment Plant in west Austin. Officials said that pipeline was put back into service Wednesday after being out of service for repairs.

The utility says it is releasing powdered carbon into the system to help resolve the problem. As of Saturday morning, some customers were still complaining of odor and taste issues.
