AUSTIN (KJCE) -- Rhoda Mae Kerr, Austin's first female fire chief, will be stepping down from her post on on July 1.

In a memo to the department released Wednesday, Kerr - a fourth-generation firefighter - says she'll be taking on the role of Fire Chief for Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, where she began her career more than 30 years ago.

"Although the decision to leave Austin did not come easily, Fort Lauderdale holds a special place in my heart," said Chief Kerr. "So when the opportunity arose to return there and close out my career as the leader of that organization, I just couldn't say no."

Kerr joined the Austin Fire Department as its Fire Chief in February 2009. She also served five years in the same position in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Kerr says there are several projects she plans to complete in the next four months prior to her departure from Austin.
