Back-to-school sales tax holiday this weekend

AUSTIN (KJCE) - Yet another sign that school is about to start... Texas' back-to-school sales tax holiday is this upcoming weekend, August 11-13.

The annual event, since 1999, exempts retailers from collecting sales tax on apparel, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100, meaning a savings of roughly $8 on every $100 spent on eligible purchases.

The Texas Comptroller has a list of qualifying clothing and footwear items, as well as qualifying school supplies on their website. Items that are on the list, but are individually priced above $100, are not considered tax-exempt.

Texas is one of 16 states to offer a sales tax holiday this year; the holiday is one of only 7 across the country that is focused on school supplies. The Comptroller's office projects the exemptions will save Texas shoppers $87 million.
