AUSTIN (KJCE) -- With the 86th Texas Legislature gaveled into session, the Texas House has a new speaker: Dennis Bonnen.

Bonnen, a Republican from Angleton, replaces former Speaker Joe Straus, who retired following the 85th Legislature.

"I am humbled by the confidence placed in me by my fellow members of this House," said Speaker Bonnen. "I approach my role as Speaker with a great amount of respect for this tremendous institution and for every member who has been sent here to be the voice for their constituents."

Bonnen has served in the Texas House since being first elected in 1997 at the age of 24. He represents Texas' 25th House district, covering the southern portion of Brazoria County and all of Matagorda County.

Speaking to lawmakers after being elected, Bonnen defined the 140-day legislative session as an opportunity to address many critical issues facing all Texans, with school finance and property tax reform as top priorities. "We have an opportunity to tackle our  number one priority to fix our state’s broken school finance system and strive to make Texas schools the best in the country," Bonnen said.
