HAYS COUNTY (KJCE) -- A burglary call early Friday morning led to an officer-involved shooting, leaving a suspect dead and a Hays County Sheriff's deputy injured.

Officials say they received a 9-1-1 call around 3:47 a.m. Friday morning about a man with a gun who was possibly breaking into Jean's Antiques at 11500 Ranch Road 12 in Wimberley. Deputies arrived and attempted to locate the male subject; while doing so, someone began shooting at them, striking patrol vehicles and wounding one of the deputies. Deputies fired back and the suspect retreated into a nearby wooded area.

Following a search, the suspect - identified as 26-year old Rocky Miles West - was found deceased. It is not known if West died from a self-inflicted wound or the shots that were fired by deputies.

The injured deputy has been identified as 28-year old Benjamin Gieselman, a three-year veteran of the HCSO. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his legs and upper body, and was flown to an Austin-area hospital for treatment.

Officials say West had an extensive criminal history. His last arrest was in January of 2017 for a family violence charge of assault with bodily injury.

The Hays County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division as well as the Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers Office is conducting the investigation into this incident. Anyone with information is asked to call (512) 393-7896 or Hays County Crime Stoppers at (800) 324-TIPS.
