Classes cancelled at Bowie HS Thursday, Friday after overnight damage

Police seeking suspect who caused "considerable damage" to SW Austin campus

AUSTIN (KJCE) -- Austin ISD officials cancelled Thursday classes at Bowie High School after the campus was damaged overnight, and now say the school will remain closed on Friday as well.

District officials say a number of windows and other 'considerable damage' was done to the campus - Austin ISD's largest high school - located in Southwest Austin along Slaughter Lane between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

AISD Police Chief Ashley Gonzalez says that investigators are confident that only one male suspect, pictured above, was involved in the incident. "Quite a bit of damage" was done to the front of the building, side wings, the gyms, and the school's cafeteria, by what appears to be bricks and rocks on more than 80 windows across the campus.

Officials say in addition to the cleanup, the shattered glass exposed an adhesive from the original construction that contained asbestos. Crews are working to mitigate that concern as well as secure the broken windows with plywood. The district hopes to have the campus back in operation by Monday, with finals ongoing.

Police ask anyone with information on this incident to call Crime Stoppers at (512) 472-8477. Gonzalez says investigators continue to work the case in an effort to identify the suspect.
