CTRMA to consider speed increase on MoPac Express Lanes

July 23, 2019 - 8:09 am

AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- MoPac's Express Lanes could soon become a little more "express".

The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority on Wednesday will consider an agenda item increasing the speed limit for the 11-mile segment of the express lanes between Parmer Lane and Cesar Chavez, from 65mph to 70mph.

The change would not affect the general purpose lanes, which would remain at 65mph.

CTRMA says a speed study in December 2018 supports an increase in the maximum speed limit on the express lanes to 70mph; it also supports establishing a minimum speed limit of 55mph.

If CTRMA approves the change, the new limits would go into effect as soon as updated signs - at a cost of $80,000 - are installed.
