AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Driver license offices across the state will close temporarily to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced late Wednesday.

The move comes after Gov. Abbott temporarily suspended expiration dates on driver licenses and other identification documents.

Offices that provide testing for Commercial Driver Licenses (CDLs) will remain open by appointment only. Visits can be scheduled by e-mailing cdlappointments@dps.texas.gov.

"Our commercial drivers are essential to the consistent flow of goods throughout the state, and we will continue to ensure those seeking an initial CDL can do so," Abbott said. "Closing driver license offices to those not seeking an initial CDL is another step the state is taking to encourage social distancing in our communities."

Officials also suggest individuals see if they can renew their license or identification certificate online at the DPS website.
