Family of 3 displaced, dog missing after NE Austin house fire

AUSTIN (KJCE) -- Fire destroyed a home in northeast Austin Friday morning, displacing a family of three and leaving a pet missing in the blaze.

Crews responded to a two-story home in the 12000 block of Zeller Lane, just southeast of Interstate 35 and Parmer Lane just before 8 a.m. Strong winds made it difficult to get the fire under control, meaning crews were working from a defensive posture during the firefight.

Two extra fire units were called out to patrol the neighborhood, to ensure that burning embers from the two-story home didn't spread to nearby properties.

Austin Fire officials say the home will be a total loss. The Central Texas Red Cross is assisting the displaced family.

The cause of the fire is unknown as investigators work the scene.
