Fire crews knock down blaze at homeless camp under North Austin bridge

AUSTIN ( -- Firefighters have put out a blaze at a homeless camp under a north Austin roadway, while the cleanup continues.

The fire broke out around 9 a.m. Monday morning in the 1100 block of Anderson Lane, underneath the eastbound frontage road between Interstate 35 and Cameron Road.

No one was injured in the blaze. Fire officials said the scene covered about 300 yards, with hundreds of needles and other dangerous debris. So far, officials say the cause of the blaze is undetermined.

Traffic delays continued for much of the afternoon as TxDOT crews worked to clean up the area and ensure that the road structures are safe. All lanes of traffic finally re-opened around 5 p.m. Monday afternoon.
