Fire truck driver crashes after experiencing medical emergency

Highway 620 closed for nearly 9 hours

AUSTIN (KJCE) -- A Lake Travis firefighter is recovering after experiencing a medical emergency and losing consciousness while driving a fire truck on Highway 620 early Wednesday afternoon.

Officials say that firefighter, three other firefighters, and six other people were taken to the hospital after the fire truck veered into another lane, crashed into five vehicles and rolled over in the 5900 block of RM 620 near Commanche Trail around 1:45 p.m.

Two of the patients sustained serious, life-threatening injuries, and 8 others were transported with non-life-threatening injuries. STAR Flight assisted with transports to nearby hospitals.

Traffic along 620 remained shut down in both directions for much of the afternoon and evening, while crews worked to clear the wreckage from the scene and restore damaged traffic signals. Lanes finaly re-opened around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night.
