AUSTIN ( -- A man is dead after an hours-long SWAT standoff ended in a shootout late Sunday night.

Officers were called to the 2100 block of East Anderson Lane, to the Salado at Walnut Creek Apartments just after 7 p.m. Sunday night. According to police, a 911 caller said her husband had attacked her and threatened to kill her. The suspect, described as a 74-year old male, locked himself inside the apartment while flashing a firearm.

Officers were able to evacuate the victim and other residents of the apartment building.

After a standoff, the suspect opened the front door and started firing at the SWAT officers, hitting an armored vehicle several times. Officers returned fire, hitting and killing the man.

Police Chief Brian Manley says the officer who shot and killed the suspect is a 25-year veteran of the department. They'll be placed on administrative duty while the investigation continues, which is standard procedure for any officer-involved shooting.

APD is asking anyone who may have shot cellphone video of the incident to submit that video to the department.
