Man killed in southwest Austin wreck Thursday morning

AUSTIN ( -- A man is dead and two others are recovering after a deadly wreck in southwest Austin early Thursday.

Austin-Travis County EMS says the wreck happened near U.S. 290 and FM 1826 just before 7 a.m. Austin Police say three vehicles were involved in the crash; an SUV was leaving a private drive and turning eastbound on Highway 290 when the driver disregarded a sign prohibiting left hand turns. The driver pulled out in front of a silver car, which attempted to avoid the SUV; after crashing into the SUV, the car continued to travel into the oncoming lanes where it was struck by a truck.

The driver of the car was pronounced deceased on the scene; Austin-Travis County EMS says he was a man in his 20s. The driver of the truck was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police issued a citation to the driver of the SUV for disregarding the sign prohibiting turns.

Eastbound lanes of U.S. 290 headed towards the Y in Oak Hill were closed around the wreck for several hours, re-opening around 11:30 a.m.
