AUSTIN ( -- A man is fighting for his life Thursday morning after an armed robbery in north Austin.

Police say the incident happened around midnight in the parking lot of an Applebee's restaurant at 7522 North IH-35 along the southbound frontage road.

Investigators say the victim met a friend at the restaurant and was talking to that person through the car window when the armed robber walked up. Police say the gunman told the victim, "Give me your watch or I'll shoot you."

The victim tried to put his car in gear to drive away; at that point, someone opened fire into the vehicle. The victim was able to drive himself to a gas station north of the area and call a friend, who helped to get him to the hospital. He remains hospitalized with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Police have no information available on either the victim's acquaintance or the robbery suspect.
