Massive SH 130 pileup in heavy fog rings in New Year

January 01, 2019 - 11:40 am

AUSTIN (KJCE) -- First responders spent much of the first morning of 2019 cleaning up a multi-vehicle pileup on State Highway 130.

The Travis County Sheriff's Office says its deputies responded to a multi-car crash in the 1400 block of SH 130 southbound near Harold Green Road just after 1 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Officials say the first deputy on scene attempted to warn approaching motorists, but thick fog and near-zero visibility led to drivers striking the deputy's vehicle. A total of 32 vehicles, including two semi trucks, were involved. Austin-Travis County EMS says it evaluated 56 patients, transporting nine to area hospitals with injuries ranging from serious to minor. One patient refused treatment on the scene.

Austin Police, Austin Fire, Austin-Travis County EMS, Texas DPS, Capital Metro, and the Texas Department of Transportation all responded to the scene.

SH 130 was shut down in both directions for a time. The southbound lanes re-opened just before 9 a.m. Tuesday morning.
