AUSTIN (KJCE) -- Meechaiel Criner has been found guilty of capital murder in the April 2016 slaying of University of Texas freshman Haruka Weiser.

The jury returned its verdict Friday afternoon, after deliberating for more than 10 hours.

The judge in the case sentenced Criner, now 20 years old, to life in prison. Because Criner was 17 years old at the time of Weiser's murder, he was not eligible for the death penalty.

18-year old Weiser disappeared on the evening of April 3, 2016, while walking to her dorm. Her body was found a day later in Waller Creek, with "obvious" signs of trauma and sexual assault to her body.
