Parking meter hours extended downtown east of I-35

AUSTIN (KJCE) -- Free daytime parking is a thing of the past in downtown Austin, east of I-35.

Beginning this week, on-street metered hours have been extended to Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. until midnight. The changes are in an area bordered by I-35 to Chicon and East 11th Street to Lady Bird Lake.

Previously, meters were only active Tuesday through Saturday, between 6 p.m. and midnight.

Officials have been placing notices on vehicles parked in the area for the past two weeks, and will issue warning citations for the next two weeks before beginning to fully enforce the new rules.

City officials say the increased meter hours aim to help create turnover and create parking availability. The meters in this area are part of a Parking and Transportation Management District approved by City Council in 2014. More than half of the net parking fees collected are set aside for capital improvement projects to improve mobility within the district.
