Pedestrian hit, killed on I-35 in downtown Austin

Southbound I-35 re-opens after about three hours

AUSTIN (KJCE) -- A man is dead after being hit by a semi-truck on Interstate 35 in downtown Austin Friday morning.

Police say a white male in his 20s was struck just before 5:30 a.m. The accident happened in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near 6th Street, where police believe the pedestrian was trying to cross the interstate.

Medics pronounced the victim deceased around 5:45 a.m. The victim did not have any identification on him, according to police.

The driver of the semi and another driver called 9-1-1 to report that they hit the pedestrian. Both drivers stayed on the scene and are cooperating with police.

Southbound lanes of the interstate remain closed until about 8:15 a.m., with traffic backing up all the way past U.S. 183.

This is the 37th fatal traffic crash and 38th traffic fatality in the City of Austin in 2018.
