AUSTIN (KJCE) -- A man is dead following a fatal hit-and-run crash in south Austin Wednesday morning.

Police say it happened around 8 a.m. at South 1st Street and Ben White Boulevard. A white truck crashed into a Capital Metro bus stop, striking a Hispanic male in his 40s who was waiting at the bus stop. That victim was later pronounced deceased on the scene by Austin-Travis County EMS medics.

Witnesses tell police the suspect stopped after crashing through the bus stop, examined the damage on his truck, walked back to the bus stop and looked at the damage there, then got back in his truck and sped away at a high rate of speed down Highway 71. He remains at large, although police say they have both video and photos that will help them identify the suspect.

The driver of the truck is described as a white male in his 50s, wearing a black shirt and khaki pants.

Anyone with any information on this incident is asked to call the Vehicular Homicide unit at 512-974-5789.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
