AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin Police say the man killed in a Saturday shooting at a north Austin apartment complex was trying to rob the man who shot him.

The incident happened early Saturday morning, around 2:15 a.m. in the 13600 block of Elm Ridge Lane at the Madison at Wells Branch apartments.

Police say witnesses said 22-year old Tony Ray Green Jr. and another unidentified black male kicked in the door to an apartment belonging to David Smith, in an apparent robbery attempt. After forcing entry to the apartment, police say Smith shot Green in self defense; at that point, the other man fled the scene.

When police arrived to the scene, they found Green unresponsive with obvious trauma to his body. Green was pronounced deceased a shot time later.

Police say Smith was arrested on a marijuana charge, and was booked into the Travis County Jail.

The homicide case has been sent to the Travis County District Attorney's Office for review.

Anyone with additional information on the case is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (512) 472-TIPS.
