Red Flag Warning in effect for metro area Saturday

April 13, 2018 - 3:16 pm

AUSTIN (KJCE) -- Dangerous fire conditions will be present in the Austin area on Saturday, forecasters say.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for all of the Austin metro area including Bastrop and Caldwell Counties from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Saturday.

The warning replaces a previously issued Fire Weather Watch for just Travis, Williamson, and Hays, and extends the warning further east to include Bastrop and Caldwell.

A cold front has moved through the area, bringing a much drier air mass with breezy winds. Locations along and west of the I-35 corridor will see northerly winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour, with stronger gusts up to 35 mph.

Combined with low humidity values of 15 to 30 percent, any fires that do develop will likely be able to spread rapidly.

Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning. Unincorporated areas of Travis County are currently under a burn ban.
