Separate overnight shootings leave two critically injured

AUSTIN ( -- Austin Police are investigating two separate shootings overnight that left two victims critically injured.

The first shooting happened around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday night in the 1700 block of East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Comal Street. A man in his 20s was shot in the chest, according to Austin-Travis County EMS. Police say they have no details about the suspect in this case.

Then, around 2 a.m. Thursday morning, another man was shot in the 1500 block of Rutland Drive near Metric Boulevard. Police say the victim, described as a man in his 40s, was walking down the street when someone came up and shot him in the head. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries, although police say his condition has improved in the hours since.

Police say there is no evidence the two cases are connected in any way, and both appear to be isolated incidents.
