AUSTIN (KJCE) -- Six candidates have been named for consideration to head up the Austin Fire Department, the city announced Wednesday.

The department is searching for a new leader following the departure of Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr in July.

The six candidates are:

  • Joel Baker – former Fire Chief for Atlanta Fire Rescue
  • Noel Horan – Assistant to the Director with the San Antonio Fire Department
  • Steve Landin – Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Laredo
  • Kevin McGee – Chief for the Department of Fire and Rescue in Prince William County, Virginia
  • Mark Rohlfing – Fire Chief for the Milwaukee Fire Department
  • Scott Walker – Assistant Chief for the Phoenix Fire Department

City officials say the candidates will take part in panel interviews that are expected to begin next week. The person ultimately selected will take charge of 1,151 sworn firefighters, 106 civilian staff and an annual operating budget of almost $200 million while heading up the country's 16th largest fire department.
