Snow blankets Austin, parts of Central Texas

AUSTIN (KJCE) -- An unexpected dusting of snow turned much of Austin and portions of the metro area into a bit of a winter wonderland Thursday night.

Camp Mabry recorded 0.4" of snowfall, while Austin-Bergstrom International Airport picked up 1.3". While the precipitation was exiting the area late Thursday evening, concern remained about the possibility of wet roadways forming black ice as temperatures drop into the low 30s and upper 20s throughout much of the area into Friday morning.

Late Thursday night, many area districts had either cancelled or delayed classes for Friday.

Thursday's snowfall is the first measurable winter precipitation in Austin since February 2011.

A Freeze Warning remains in effect until 9 AM Friday morning, when temperatures are expected to rebound above the freezing mark. Temperatures are expected to continue to warm this weekend.
