AUSTIN ( -- One person is dead following a stabbing incident in south Austin Friday morning.

Police say it happened in the 500 block of South Congress near East Riverside just before 8 a.m. Friday. The first attack happened at Bennu Coffee, where the suspect injured one person.

Patrons of the coffee shop reportedly detained the suspect, but he was able to escape and run into a Freebirds World Burrito next door. Two people inside the Freebirds were then stabbed - one man, identified as being in his 20s, was pronounced deceased on the scene.

From there, the suspect was able to climb up to the roof of the Freebirds. He jumped off in an attempt to evade police; police say he's been taken into custody, hospitalized with injuries sustained from the jump.

Austin-Travis County EMS says the man from the coffee shop, identified as being in his 50s, was transported to a nearby trauma center with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries. The suspect, identified as a male in his 20s, was transported in critical condition after undergoing CPR.

In addition to APD and ATCEMS, Austin Fire crews also assisted on the scene. The attack marks the city's first homicide of 2020.
