Thieves strike, empty Richard Overton's bank account

AUSTIN (KJCE) -- Thieves have targeted one of Austin's own - Richard Overton, the nation's oldest living veteran of World War II.

Overton's family says the 112-year old's bank account has been drained over the past couple of months, by someone who was able to obtain his Social Security number and purchase savings bonds.

Despite the loss from Overton's personal bank account, the thieves did not hit a separate account with funds that pay for Overton's care. Family members say those expenses are $480 per day and nearly $15,000 per month, and the family has a GoFundMe page to help. So far, that GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $322,000.
