Ceremonies, remembrances, and events across Central Texas

AUSTIN ( -- It's long been considered the start of summer, even if the season doesn't officially change until June 21. Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and we've put together a list of events across Austin for the holiday weekend. More importantly, take a moment to remember the reason for the holiday - to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

On Monday, flags across the nation should be flown at half-staff until noon, and then raised to full staff.

Memorial Day remembrances and ceremonies:

  • Texas State Cemetery Memorial Day Service: Monday morning at 10 a.m., this annual service takes place in the southwest section of the cemetery known as "Republic Hill". (909 Navasota Street, Austin)
  • Georgetown Memorial Day Ceremony: Monday morning at 9:30 a.m., Texas Sen. Ted Cruz will speak at this ceremony, honoring the men and women of our armed forces who gave their lives in service to our country. (2 Texas Drive, Georgetown)
  • Bastrop Memorial Day Ceremony: Monday morning at 10 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery (1409 Texas 95 North, Bastrop). U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul will deliver a keynote address.
  • San Marcos Memorial Day Ceremony: Monday morning at 10 a.m. at the Hays County Veterans Memorial (450 East Hopkins, San Marcos). Names of all Hays County soldiers who have been killed in action will be recited.
  • Round Rock Memorial Day Ceremony: Monday morning at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial (600 Pecan Avenue, Round Rock).

Other events of interest around the area this weekend:

  • Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry: Over 45,000 square feet of the history of the Texas Military Forces from 1823 through today. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily; on Saturday and Sunday, "Close Assault: 1968" showcases a Vietnam War living history demonstration with showtimes at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. (2200 West 35th Street)
  • Sun City Memorial Day Concert: Sunday night at 7 p.m. at the Georgetown Veterans' Memorial Plaza (2 Texas Drive), the U.S. Army's 36th Infantry Division Band from Camp Mabry will perform a free concert of patriotic music and Big Band tunes.
  • 51st Anniversary Fiesta Amistad: Saturday at the Allen Baca Center (301 W. Bagdad Avenue) in Round Rock. Visitors are invited to partake in the delicious food, games, arts and crafts, and a variety of entertainment for the entire family. Gates open at noon, with events running until midnight.
  • Life Time Tri CapTex: Monday, 5:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Race includes a swim in Lady Bird Lake, a bike course through downtown to the Capitol, and a run through Butler Park to Vic Mathias Shores. Expect road closures through the downtown area.
  • LBJ Library & Museum: Admission is free on Monday (open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 2313 Red River Street)
  • Cedar Park's Poolapalooza: Monday, Noon to 6 p.m. at Veteran's Memorial Park Pool (2525 West New Hope Drive). Live music, food concessions, face painting, and swimming.
