Tropical wave likely to bring some rain to Central Texas

Forecast: 1 to 1.5" widespread totals possible in Austin through Sunday; higher totals south, west

AUSTIN (KJCE) -- With the nation's eyes on Hurricane Florence as it makes landfall in North Carolina Friday morning, Texas officials continue to keep an eye on a tropical low in the Gulf of Mexico.

Flash Flood Watch in effect for Hays, Caldwell Counties until 7PM Saturday...

As of 7 a.m. Friday morning, the system still has not developed into a tropical cyclone. And with the system expected to move onshore along the Texas coast later today, forecasters say development isn't likely. Regardless, the system will bring heavy rains to much of the southern half of the state in the next 48 hours.

The 7 a.m. Friday update from the National Hurricane Center:

Shower activity has changed little in organization in association with an elongated area of low pressure located over the western Gulf of Mexico. Although this system probably will not develop into a tropical depression before it moves onshore of Texas later today, it is likely to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds across portions of northeastern Mexico and Texas through Saturday. Interests there should monitor the progress of this system, and refer to products from their local weather office. * Formation chance through 48 hours...low...20 percent. * Formation chance through 5 days...low...20 percent.

The National Weather Service says the Austin area can expect widespread totals of an inch to an inch and a half of rain from this system, with some higher isolated totals possible. The bulk of the heavy rain is forecast to fall south of the Austin metro area, where a Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Saturday evening.

With grounds already saturated from rains earlier this month, any heavy rainfall has the potential to cause some flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
