AUSTIN ( -- Authorities are investigating a reported collision between two construction cranes in east Austin Wednesday morning.

First responders were called to the 1600 block of Robert Browning Street in the Mueller area, just south of Dell Children's Medical Center, after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

According to Austin-Travis County EMS, a total of 22 victims were involved in the incident. EMS said 8 ambulances, two commanders, and one division chief responded to the incident.

Of the victims, 16 sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to area hospitals. Three other victims refused EMS treatment, and three other individuals involved in the incident were not injured.

EMS said all of the injuries happened as people attempted to get out of the site after the cranes collided. Despite early reports, no "collapse" was involved at the scene.

One crane operator remained in place with a foot on the brake to act as a "secondary safety." Officials said he was finally able to climb down safely around 6 p.m., after the cranes were secured.

An investigation into what caused the collision is ongoing.
