November 11, 2017 - 6:57 pm

AUSTIN (KJCE) -- Two people are dead following a vehicle fire on the city's south side Saturday evening.

Austin-Travis County EMS reported the fatalities just after 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening, near the intersection of Riverside Drive and Vargas Road. Medics reported a vehicle on fire with two occupants of unknown age or gender. Police later said the vehicle appeared to leave the roadway and crash into a billboard.

Police continue to investigate the scene, and work to determine the circumstances leading to the crash and subsequent fire.

The incident was the second fatal one on Austin roadways Saturday; just hours earlier, a multi-car collision on U.S. 183 killed two and sent three more to area hospitals.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call the APD Vehicular Homicide unit at (512) 974-4424.
