COMMERCE, Texas ( -- Two women were killed and a child was hospitalized after a shooting on the campus of Texas A&M University-Commerce in north Texas.

University officials say the shooting happened in the Pride Rock residence hall on the campus, which is about 65 miles northeast of Dallas. Officers responded to a call around 10:15 a.m., finding two women dead in a room and a 2-year old boy with them.

It's not clear if the women were students. Police say the boy is in stable condition, and the suspected shooter has not yet been identified.

The campus remained in a shelter-in-place mode for much of the afternoon. Classes were canceled for the rest of the day.

Officials say their investigation is ongoing, and the area surrounding Pride Rock would remain closed. Students who were otherwise displaced could go to the student center on campus, where counselors were being made available.

Monday's shooting comes after an off-campus shooting in October that killed two people and left a dozen others injured last October.
