AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Homeless camps under Austin's highways will be cleared beginning next week, state officials announced Tuesday.

TxDOT crews will begin clearing the camps on November 4, according to flyers distributed today at several encampments. State crews will resume cleaning the right-of-way under state highways, including Interstate 35, US 183, US 290, and Highway 71.

The move comes after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott set a November 1 deadline for the City of Austin to make "consequential improvements" to its homelessness situation; otherwise, he would call in state resources to help.

"Governor Abbott has been clear that unless the City of Austin demonstrated improvements to protect public health and safety, the state of Texas would step in to address this crisis," said John Wittman, press secretary for Abbott, in a statement. "With today’s notice from TxDOT, the Governor is following through on his promise."
