Wrong-way scooter rider dies after being hit by Uber driver downtown
AUSTIN (KJCE) -- A man struck by a Uber driver as he was riding a scooter the wrong way in downtown Austin last week has died from his injuries, police say.
Austin Police say 21-year old Mark Sands was riding a Lime scooter northbound in the southbound left lane of the Interstate 35 frontage road around 1 a.m. Friday morning. A silver Volkswagen Jetta, which police say was driving for Uber at the time, was traveling southbound in the right-hand lane, before changing lanes to enter an on-ramp to the interstate and hitting the scooter.
The pedestrian on the scooter was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center with critical, life-threatening injuries. Police say he succumbed to those injuries Saturday afternoon around 2:30 p.m.
An investigation into the case is ongoing, and toxicology results are still pending.
Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-5576. It's the city's fifth fatal traffic crash so far in 2019.
